Parallex

About

A second view of the technology, taken independently of the people selling it.

I started writing software at thirteen, and I have been building and running technology for 43 years. I have done technical due diligence since 2000. For more than a decade I worked at In-Q-Tel, the venture firm that finds technology for the intelligence community, where much of the work was matching a company to a customer who needed it.

I started attending family office events in 2018, and that is where I learned how these offices decide: a principal, a family, sometimes a shared team, and a technical question nobody in the room can answer. Parallex exists for that question.

Parallex has been a company since 2009. I left In-Q-Tel on the last day of 2016, and I could not consult through Parallex while I was there or during the year of contract work that followed. So it stayed small: three investments between 2010 and about 2013, and a few small projects. Each of those investments was cleared with In-Q-Tel's general counsel before I made it. Now it is where I do this work. My wife and I own Parallex. Most engagements are done by a team built for the problem in front of us, and we bring in experts as the work requires. You do not get a standing bench. You get the people your deal needs.

The name

Parallax is looking at one thing from two angles. The offset between the views tells you its depth. That is the job: a second view of a company's technology, taken independently of the people selling it.
